A Gradient-Inspired Transformation

King George Hub is a complete mixed-use community in Surrey City Centre directly adjacent to the Expo Line’s King George Station and rapid transit. This integrated transit-oriented development has transformed the rapidly evolving downtown core of Surrey – British Columbia’s fastest growing city. This multi-phased project has interconnectivity and convenience and includes a mixture of office, retail, residential and transit – bringing vibrancy and activity to the neighbourhood. We collaborated with PCI Development to transform an underutilized 2,000 sq.ft. rooftop and 1,000 sq.ft. indoor amenity space into vibrant, functional areas. The central concept for this project was the use of a sunset-inspired gradient, transitioning from soft pinks to deep blues, to create a cohesive and visually striking identity across all spaces.

Exterior amenity

The rooftop was divided into three zones—Eating, Play, and Social—each designed to facilitate specific activities. Furniture selections reflected the gradient palette, with hues drawn from sunset tones to seamlessly integrate color into the design. The "Eating" zone featured communal tables for shared meals, the "Play" zone encouraged recreation with open space and playful seating, and the "Social" zone provided lounge areas for connection and conversation.

interior amenity

Inside, the gradient concept extended into a thoughtfully designed indoor environment with zones that promoted different activities:

Play: Vibrant pink donut-shaped beanbag chairs provided a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Collaborate: Flexible whiteboard walls and movable tables allowed teams to gather, brainstorm, and jot down their ideas dynamically. Relax: Cozy furnishings in soft gradient tones offered a calming space for unwinding.

a unified visual identity

To tie the project together, we incorporated the gradient palette into the elevator lobbies and corridors, ensuring a cohesive narrative from arrival to interaction. Vinyl signage and gradient ceiling tiles enlivened the back corridors, reinforcing the theme and offering a dynamic visual experience throughout.

This project illustrates how a unifying concept, like the use of color gradients, can transform and activate spaces into meaningful environments for connection, play, and relaxation.
